Albuquerque, NM (SportsNetwork. Detroit Tigers Store .com) - The New Mexico Bowl was bereft of big plays, but Kent Myers accounted for two of them as Utah State grinded out a 21-6 victory over UTEP on Saturday. Myers ran for a 48-yard touchdown in the first quarter and set up a Nick Vigil TD run in the third with a 46-yard pass to JoJo Natson. The Aggies were otherwise stagnant on offense, but so were the Miners, who converted 5-of-20 third-down tries and managed just 149 rushing yards, well below their season average of 212. Utah State (10-4) reached double-digit wins for the second time in school history and posted its third straight postseason victory. The Miners (7-6) were hoping to end their campaign the way they started -- with a win at University Stadium in Albuquerque. They upended New Mexico there in the season opener behind Aaron Jones 237 yards and three TDs on the ground, but Jones was limited to 88 yards on 25 carries in the finale. Jameill Showers completed 13-of-24 passes for 126 yards and an interception in defeat. A quiet opening half ended with Utah State clinging to a 7-3 lead, and there were not many fireworks in the second half other than the Aggies 7-play, 75- yard drive to start the third quarter. Natson caught a slant over the middle and zigzagged through the defense down to the UTEP 24-yard line. Myers ran it down to the 3 with a 14-yard run on third down, and Vigil punched it in from there. After Nick Diaz missed a 47-yard field goal with under 10 minutes to play, UTEP held the ball for nearly seven minutes thanks to a pair of fourth-down conversions. Faced with a 4th-and-6 from the Utah State 16-yard line, the Miners opted for a field goal, and Jay Mattox booted a 34-yarder to cut the deficit to one possession with 3:02 remaining. Rather than attempt an onside kick, UTEP opted to kick the ball deep, and Mattox shanked it out of bounds. Joe Hill sealed the win and Utah States 279-yard day on the ground with an 11-yard touchdown run. Mattox kicked a 32-yard field goal with 3:10 remaining in the first quarter, but on the third play of the ensuing drive, Myers took a shotgun draw 48 yards for a score. The freshman QB faked a screen pass, kept it himself up the middle, slipped past a defender at the 45 and outran everyone else before diving over the goal line. Both teams made costly mistakes just before halftime. Following a second straight Myers turnover, the Miners lined up for a chip shot field goal try, only to have the holder drop the snap. Utah States Ronald Butler had a touchdown run called back in the closing seconds because of an illegal formation penalty, and Diaz proceeded to hook a 28-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the half. Game Notes The Aggies won 11 games in 2012 ... Utah State was 1-6 in bowl games prior to winning three in a row ... The Miners fell to 5-9 all-time in bowl appearances, with all five of their wins coming in the Sun Bowl ... Utah State won the only other two meetings in 1960 and 61 ... Chris Heisey followed with a two-run triple and Billy Hamilton added an RBI double, all but sealing Cincinnatis fourth straight victory and seventh in eight games. Brandon Phillips, celebrating his 33rd birthday, hit a go-ahead homer in the ninth for the Reds before pinch-hitter Buster Posey tied it with an RBI double off hard-throwing closer Aroldis Chapman in the bottom half.NEW YORK -- Brian McCann was far from panic mode. He was hitting the ball well, and figured positive results would follow. Still, he enjoyed seeing his drives wind up in the seats instead of someones glove. McCann put an emphatic end to his season-opening slump, hitting his first two home runs for the New York Yankees to help beat John Lackey and the Boston Red Sox 7-4 Saturday. "I was pleased about my at-bats today," McCann said. Carlos Beltran, Alfonso Soriano and Kelly Johnson also connected as the Yankees scored all their runs on homers. Lackey was tagged for a career-high four home runs in 5 2-3 innings. New York has won two of three in a series that wraps up Sunday night. A.J. Pierzynski hit his first home run for the Red Sox. After striking out in the first inning and dropping his batting average to .158, McCann quickly reversed his fortunes. The seven-time All-Star who left Atlanta to sign an $85 million, five-year deal with the Yankees led off the fourth with a liner into the first row of the second deck in right field. McCann hurried around the bases, and fans were still cheering when Soriano followed with his third home run of the week. Beltran opened the sixth with a double and McCann homered to right-centre. It was the catchers 10th career multihomer game. "Ive been seeing the ball pretty well to be hitting in the hundreds," McCann said. As for any concerns about a slow start, he said, "I dont look at it that way." The Red Sox have been shifting on McCann during this series, moving an extra infielder onto the right side once they get a strike on him. Facing Lackey for the first time, McCann made moot any shift. "Hes hit the ball better than his numbers indicated," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I was not really concerned about it. I know hes going to hit," he said. Girardi said he assumed the short right-field fence and the jet stream that carries the ball in that direction would benefit the leefty-hitting McCann. Jim Leyland Jersey. "It showed up today," Girardi said. Hiroki Kuroda (2-1) pitched into the seventh, and reliever Matt Thornton gave up Mike Carps two-run single that made it 6-4. With runners at the corners, Carp was caught stealing for the third out. Shawn Kelley pitched a perfect ninth for his second save. Lackey (2-1) threw plenty of strikes, but gave up 10 hits. He walked none, fanned six and missed a chance to get off to a 3-0 start for the first time in his career. Jacoby Ellsbury bunted for a two-out single in the first and Beltran homered on an 0-2 pitch right down the middle. Lackey was already stalking toward the plate to get a new ball from the umpire before Beltran reached second base. "I just left it over the plate. It wasnt a very good pitch, up in the zone. One of those Id like to have back, for sure," Lackey said. Johnson hit his third homer in the eighth. NOTES: Soriano had played only one inning in right field during his career -- in the 2003 World Series, in fact -- before starting there in this game. He made an error on the first chance he got, dropping a soft fly by Xander Bogaerts. ... David Ortiz has reached safely in 25 straight games against the Yankees, the longest active streak vs. New York. He got one hit, and is 11 for 20 lifetime facing Kuroda. ...
